Why is there a popping sound when a joint is adjusted?
Adjustment of a joint may result in release of gas bubbles between the joints that make a popping sound – it’s exactly the same as when you “crack” your knuckles. The noise is caused by the change of pressure within the joint that results in gas bubbles being released. There is no pain involved.

Manual Chiropractic Adjustments
A chiropractic adjustment is a procedure where a chiropractor will use his or her hands to apply a controlled, sudden force to a joint, pushing it beyond its normal range of motion. Popping or cracking sounds may be heard as the joint is moved throughout the session. This is the audible release of gas that is caused as oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide exits the joint.
A spinal adjustment is performed with the express intent to improve or correct vertebral subluxations, which are the signs and symptoms that result from an abnormal alignment of vertebrae. Treatment goals are to increase range of motion, reduce nerve irritability, and improve overall well-being.
Once completed, the patient will normally have a sensation of relief. However, some mild discomfort has been reported if the surrounding muscles are in spasm, or if the patient tenses up during chiropractic care. Though, this discomfort will only last for a short duration.
