Why is there a popping sound when a joint is adjusted?
Adjustment of a joint may result in release of gas bubbles between the joints that make a popping sound – it’s exactly the same as when you “crack” your knuckles. The noise is caused by the change of pressure within the joint that results in gas bubbles being released. There is no pain involved.

Hanh Pham, PA-C
Hanh Pham, PA-C, has been a certified practicing physician assistant for over 7 years. She graduated and received her Bachelor of Health Science degree at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia in 2007, and she went on to complete her Master Degree in Physician Assistance studies at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2009. She has four years of Orthopedic Surgery experience for treatment of fractures, dislocations, joints, and tendon pathologies and three years of Neurosurgery experience in spine and brain conditions to diversify her perspective in the field of medicine. Quality of care and patient education is of great importance to her. She believes that everyone has the right to understand their condition and treatment options so they can make the best sound decision for their body and lifestyle. She believes that invasive procedures should be a last option if there are appropriate conservative options available for patients.
Before her career, she has participated in multiple community service activities such as Habitat for Humanity in Appalachia, Meals on Wheels, and participated in many church community services. She has spent many summers as a camp counselor for the Asian American Youth Association and volunteered in after school tutoring for local elementary schools in Philadelphia. Hanh's favorite things to do are shopping, cooking, eating, and enjoying life with her husband and high school sweetheart in her free time.
